Structure of the TOEFL Junior
The Junior is intended for students over 11 years of age and this type of test allows to measure reliably and objectively the English proficiency of students. It is valid for 2 years and examines the level of students from basic to intermediate level (A1 – B2). ETS proposes 2 formats of the TOEFL Junior: the TOEFL Junior Standard that can be accompanied by the TOEFL Junior Speaking Test and the TOEFL Junior Comprehensive.
The TOEFL Junior Standard is a multiple-choice paper test that assesses the student’s level of English in terms of reading comprehension, listening comprehension, English grammar, and structure.
Structure of the TOEFL Junior
The Junior Speaking measures the skills necessary to be able to communicate in English. In turn, it offers an overview of the student’s communication skills.
The Junior Comprehensive is an online, multiple-choice, open-ended test. This measures the level of English in the areas of comprehension and expression, both written and oral. The obtained scores provide a complete picture of the student’s level of English and their knowledge in the area of English. This test is called computer based, which means that it is administered through a computer.
Test scoring system and duration
It lasts 1h 55min, with a total of 126 questions. Scores range from 600 to 900 points. This exam is divided into 3 sections :
Listening Comprehension: This section lasts 40 minutes and consists of 42 questions. It is evaluated from 200 to 300 points.
Reading comprehension: this section lasts 50 minutes and consists of 42 questions. It is evaluated from 200 to 300 points.
Semantics and Syntax: This section lasts 40 minutes and consists of 42 questions. It is evaluated from 200 to 300 points.
It consists of performing 4 types of exercises. The score ranges from 0 to 16 and lasts 18 minutes.
This lasts 2h15m and has a total of 80 questions. It is divided into 4 parts:
Listening Comprehension: This section lasts 41 minutes and consists of 36 questions.
Reading comprehension: this section lasts 36 minutes and consists of 36 questions.
Written expression: this section lasts 18 minutes and consists of 4 questions.
Oral expression: this section lasts 39 minutes and consists of 4 questions.
TOEFL Junior scores are accompanied by performance descriptors to help teachers, students, and parents understand the meaning of the scores.
